Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Accused Posed as Police Officer, Demanded Execution Upon Arrest

Sanjoy Roy, the man accused of raping and murdering a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, misrepresented himself as a police officer despite not being one. Roy, who was a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police rather than a regular officer, often wore a t-shirt and rode a bike marked with “KP” (Kolkata Police). He also used his connections to stay in police barracks and gain unauthorized access to the hospital.
Roy joined the Kolkata Police disaster management group in 2019 and later moved to the police welfare cell. He had access to various hospital departments and was involved in a scheme charging patients’ relatives for hospital admissions and bed placements in nursing homes.
Reports indicate that Roy admitted to the crime when questioned by police, showing no remorse and casually saying, “Hang me if you want.” His mobile phone contained explicit content, and he attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes after the crime. Bloodstains were later found on his shoes.
The arrest followed CCTV footage showing Roy entering the emergency building early Friday morning, with the doctor’s body discovered hours later. A Bluetooth headset found next to the victim was paired with Roy’s phone and was seen around his neck in the footage.
The case has triggered nationwide protests, with the principal of the medical college resigning amid concerns about safety and security on hospital premises. Roy has been remanded in police custody until August 23.
