Emergency’ Postponed: Government Cites Religious Sensitivities

The release of Kangana Ranaut’s political drama “Emergency,” in which she portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has been postponed once again. According to government sources, the decision was made to avoid hurting religious sentiments. Concerns raised by various religious organizations about sensitive content in the film prompted the government to take action.
Initially set for a September 6 release, the film’s debut has faced multiple delays. Recently, a BJP MP claimed the movie’s clearance was “halted” after members of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) received threats.
Controversy erupted after the release of the film’s trailer on August 14, which depicted Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, leader of the Khalistan movement, as a manipulative figure promising to support Congress in exchange for a separate Sikh state. Critics have accused the filmmakers of showing a one-sided narrative, neglecting key events such as the bombing of the Akal Takht Sahib and the casualties from Operation Blue Star.
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has urged the CBFC and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ban the film, alleging it misrepresents the Sikh community and could incite hatred.
