Milo and the Lanterns That Floated Into the Sky

— by S Madhavi

Every evening, just before bedtime, Milo liked to sit by the little round window in his room and watch the sky change colors. First came soft gold, then peach, then deep blue with tiny silver stars peeking through.

But one evening, something unusual drifted past the window.

It was a lantern.

Not a lantern carried by a person. This lantern floated all by itself, glowing gently like warm honey. It moved slowly through the air, as if it were searching for something.

Milo pressed his nose against the glass.

“Where are you going?” he whispered.

The lantern bobbed once, almost like it had heard him.

Then another lantern appeared.

And another.

Soon, dozens of floating lanterns glided across the sky above the quiet hills behind Milo’s home. Their lights shimmered softly in the cool evening air.

Milo hurried downstairs in his cozy slippers.

“Did you see them?” he asked his grandmother.

She looked out the door and smiled. “Ah,” she said softly. “The drifting lanterns have returned.”

“Where do they come from?”

“No one knows for sure,” she replied. “But they only appear on calm nights when the world is very quiet.”

Milo looked back outside. The lanterns floated slowly toward the meadow beyond the garden.

“I want to follow them.”

His grandmother wrapped a warm scarf around his shoulders. “Then follow gently,” she said. “Some things in the world glow brighter when we walk softly beside them.”

The grass in the meadow brushed against Milo’s ankles as he walked. Crickets chirped nearby, and the air smelled like cool earth and wildflowers.

The lanterns drifted ahead, never too fast, never too far.

One lantern lowered itself until it hovered right beside him. Its light was pale gold, and tiny shapes swirled inside it like dancing dust.

Milo reached out carefully.

The lantern felt warm.

Not hot like a lightbulb.

Warm like holding a mug of soup on a rainy day.

“It’s beautiful,” he whispered.

The lantern brightened happily.

Soon, Milo noticed something strange. The lanterns were stopping near different places in the meadow.

One paused beside a patch of drooping flowers.

Another hovered above a crooked little fence.

A third floated near a small bird sitting quietly beneath a bush.

As each lantern stopped, its glow grew softer and brighter at the same time. The flowers slowly lifted their heads. The fence stood straighter. The tiny bird fluffed its feathers and chirped sleepily.

Milo blinked in wonder.

“They’re helping things,” he said.

The lantern beside him gave a tiny twinkle, as if agreeing.

Farther ahead, near the old willow tree at the edge of the meadow, Milo spotted one lantern that flickered weakly. Unlike the others, its light trembled unevenly.

It drifted lower and lower until it almost touched the grass.

“Oh no,” Milo murmured.

He knelt beside it carefully.

The little lantern glowed faintly, like a firefly growing tired.

“What happened to you?”

The lantern wobbled gently.

Milo looked around. Nearby, the willow tree’s long branches swayed softly in the breeze. Hanging from one branch was a tiny silver bell.

When the wind moved, the bell made the softest sound Milo had ever heard.

Ting…

The weak lantern brightened a little.

Milo’s eyes widened.

“You need music,” he said.

He picked up two smooth stones and tapped them together very softly.

Click… click…

The lantern glowed brighter.

Milo smiled and hummed a gentle tune his grandmother sometimes sang while making evening tea.

The meadow seemed to listen.

The crickets quieted.

The willow branches swayed slowly.

And the lantern began glowing stronger and stronger until its warm golden light returned completely.

Suddenly, all the other lanterns nearby floated closer. They circled Milo and the little lantern in slow, glowing loops.

The meadow shimmered with floating lights.

Milo laughed quietly, spinning beneath them.

For a moment, it felt as though the stars had floated down from the sky just to dance above the grass.

Then the smallest lantern drifted close to Milo’s chest and gently bumped against his scarf.

Something light slipped into his hands.

It was a tiny lantern no bigger than an apple.

Its glow was soft and steady.

“For me?” Milo asked.

The lanterns twinkled warmly.

Milo held the little lantern close as the others slowly began floating upward again. One by one, they rose into the deep blue night, becoming smaller and smaller until they looked like moving stars.

Only Milo’s tiny lantern remained.

He carried it carefully all the way home.

His grandmother was waiting by the door with two warm cups of milk.

“You found something special,” she said.

Milo nodded.

“It likes music,” he whispered.

His grandmother smiled as if she already knew.

That night, Milo placed the tiny lantern beside his bed.

Its golden light filled the room softly, painting sleepy shapes on the walls. The shadows no longer looked dark and quiet. They looked cozy, like blankets folded in corners.

As Milo climbed beneath his covers, the lantern gave a small, happy flicker.

Outside, the wind whispered through the trees.

Inside, the little lantern glowed warmly beside him.

And before Milo fell asleep, he thought he saw tiny floating lights drifting far above the hills, peacefully wandering through the night sky together.

From then on, whenever Milo heard someone feeling lonely, worried, or sad, he would invite them to sit beside the glowing lantern for a while.

People always left smiling more softly than before.

And every calm evening, just before bedtime, Milo still looked out the round window, wondering where the drifting lanterns might travel next.

Sometimes, far away above the meadow, tiny golden lights answered with a gentle shimmer.

And the little lantern beside his bed always shimmered back.
